I m confused as to why the United States uses units like feet, given that their historical basis wasn't consistent enough to serve as a standard of measurement. A measurement system should make it easier to measure things precisely and consistently. Although these units have since been standardized, they still aren't very practical for conversions. For example, if someone says 23 miles, you'd usually need a calculator to know that's 121,440 feet. By contrast, 12 kilometers is immediately recognizable as 12,000 meters, since the metric system is based on powers of ten, making conversions simple and intuitive

As a Canadian, everything on here checks out as accurate. You’re only omission is we also measure distance in time, specifically it’s a very large distance. Another city isn’t 500 km or 300 miles, it’s about 4 1/2, 5 hours away.

Technical correction: for long distances we use time, not any form of distance measurement. Ex: my wife's hometown is about 2 hours away

I had a Japanese roommate in my first year of university and at one point he asked me my height. I said 5'11 and he stared at me "I thought Canada was metric? how many metres are you?" and I said "more than one, less than two"
