@enoughtoendrape: This is crazy! A female MP is trying to ban self-collection of DNA for survivors. Why would anyone be against another reporting option for survivors? An option which allows them to collect evidence and process what happened on their own terms. At the moment, 85% of survivors don’t report what happened to the police, 0.3% of rapists are convicted And the scale of the crisis is so bad that an estimated 508,000 people are raped each year. The British police have confirmed that Enough’s kits can contribute to cases, they use them where available as evidence. Survivors have asked for these kits because sometimes the thought of going to the police or SARC straight after is impossible to imagine, including getting a four hour forensic examination. We always encourage the police or SARC first as the full forensic exam is the gold standard, we exist to support those who currently are not supported within the existing system. Politicians should be listening to what survivors want, rather than using new ideas to combat rape as opportunities to boost their public profile. Alicia, we are still very happy to meet you, help you get some clear answers about Enough, in the best interest of survivors

Well that MP isn't representing the people and should therefore step down or be fired. Kepp up your awesome work.

They aren't admissible as forensic evidence in our courts and have apparently led to one trial collapsing because of them. So she isn't onto nothing here. How do you respond to that?

Good idea. Anything that helps to collect evidence is a sensible thing and I fully understand that victims don’t trust the police. Keep doing this.

She protesting against you because it can’t be used in court reliably and it might give women false hope of a conviction. There is no way of investigators verifying when an attack/rape happened, any other injuries sustained from an attack/rape that could corroborate the victims account. The evidentiary chain is broken from the start. The second concern is that self test kits might deter victims from getting tested via official channels that could have preserved the evidentiary chain and secure a conviction.

This is a terrible idea of course this wont be admissable in court did you consult legal experts before going ahead....unfortunately the victim essentially is the crime scene, you cant have people doing their own forensics, its open to abuse, tampering, contamination which is exactly what a defense team would argue straight away...

Why would she not support this. As a man with so many female family members there is not enough help as it is, seems suspicious.
