No matter how amazing you are, chances are you'll experience a release at some point during recruitment, so let's talk about the most frustrating part of the process: cuts. Getting a "no" from a house you loved is one of the toughest parts of the process. Recruitment is competitive, especially when there’s thousands of amazing girls trying to stand out, but it’s NOT always personal. Here are five reasons a chapter might release an impressive PNM, even after having great conversations with her during recruitment: 1️⃣ GPA requirements. Many chapters have strict academic cut-offs they have to follow. Each chapter must meet its national organization's minimum GPA requirement, but many choose to set an even higher standard. 2️⃣ Membership selection priorities. Some chapters might intentionally limit the number of new members they take from the same hometown or high school to build a more geographically diverse new member class. 3️⃣ Insufficient member support. Recruitment is a numbers game. Members may only vote on PNMs they've personally met, so even a great PNM can be released if she doesn't receive enough votes to advance to the next round. 4️⃣ Recruitment math. Chapters can only invite back a certain number of PNMs each round. With 2,500+ girls going through recruitment, they unfortunately have to release amazing PNMs because they just don't have enough spots. 5️⃣Timing. Chapters begin getting to know potential new members months before recruitment begins through recommendations, social media, registration materials (like PNM videos and short answers) and personal connections. If a PNM registered later, didn't have recommendations, and/or didn't know members beforehand, it’s harder to stand out when members might already be excited to meet other PNMs. With this in mind, it's SO important to focus on the chapters that did invite you back and keep a positive mindset. A release doesn't mean a chapter didn't want you. More often than not, it's the frustrating reality of recruitment math and limited invitation spots. A successful recruitment starts long before the first party. The more prepared you are beforehand, the easier it is to get on chapters' radar, stand out from thousands of other PNMs, and put yourself in the strongest position to maximize your invitations.
