theres so many variables and nuance when it comes to the GOAT conversation. position, playstyle, completeness, accolades etc. and context is key. its almost impossible to literally carry a team to win a WC or and tournament for that matter. especially at international because you have very limited options for teammates. argentina has been wc champions before copa america champions before the motion was already there. the difficulty is doing something for the first time ever taking a team which barely qualified for the WC most years and turning them into Euro winning, Nations league winning teams and inspiring generations of players. so comparing international trophy success isn't really a needle moving factor. simply because he chose to play for a smaller country in Portugal when he couldve played for Spain and probably won 2 world cups and it wouldn't really impact the GOAT conversation because he would've played for a stacked country. its what do you contribute to the sport the culture, your hometown, the world.
