@emilypowellauthenticself: I work with people who felt like something was "missing" in childhood but carry guilt for even feeling that way. Maybe they were told they were ungrateful or too sensitive, or that they “have no idea what a bad childhood looks like.” Often, what was missing wasn't love! It was emotional attunement: a caregiver who noticed their emotions, helped them make sense of them, and made them feel safe enough to express them. This isn't about blaming your parents. Many caregivers gave the love they knew how to give. But it's okay to grieve what you didn't receive. The ways we were or weren't emotionally met in childhood often shape how we relate to ourselves and others today. #emotionalattunement #attunement #emotionallyimmatureparents #narcissisticparent #therapyfyp

I think my answer about alot of childhood stuff is "I don't remember" which is probably it's own problem.

had this exact conversation with my boyfriend today. i was always told i was too sensitive and that i didn’t have anything to cry about, so even my feelings as an adult feel soooo invalid

I have a hard time remembering my childhood but my parents are so good. I don’t get it. Tonight I was crying and my mom was so nice and so supportive. Idk why I don’t remember though.

My therapist asked me when the last time my mother told me that she was proud of me. Watched my entire world crumble when the answer was “never” Yup.

The text alone was triggering for me, just the literalness of it. This was exactly my statement in the first two years with my therapist, she would try to talk about my parents but I always had other stuff. Apparently having a relatively good upbringing didn't mean I still have to be my parents' protectors 35 years later.

I thought I had a normal childhood until this video made me remember anytime I had a tantrum and was sad my parents would threaten to take the bedroom door off the wall 🤦🏻‍♀️

When I was sad I would go to my room and play with Barbies and have the parents take care of their kid who was upset. Oops!
