@therapyoptional: “Emotional flooding,” or going on an angry rant, is not necessarily uncommon in couples therapy, but most couples therapists, if they’ve been trained in couples-specific modalities, are taught how to interrupt and intervene in these moments. It’s not to invalidate or shut down the person who is going on a rant. It’s to help them slow down and soften. There are brief exceptions to this, for example, sometimes therapists encourage couples to talk (including argue) with each other without therapist intervention for several minutes to get an idea of their dynamic. Other than that, expect most couples therapists to jump in when things get this heated. #coupletherapy #relationshiptips #marriageadvice #avoidantattachmentstyle #maritalproblems

If I remember right, Dr. Orna had a lot of difficulty cutting in with her, because she would just keep talking and refused to pause. This is a lot trickier to navigate than you think

When the therapist interrupts they need to explain the why. Because it will make the emotionally overwhelmed person. Will feel shut down, not understood and wrong.

I need more background/context. For now, I'd immediately go to her partner (is this common, what are you feeling now, what does this moment have to do with why you two are here - something like that).

No offense, but my counsellor never did this and kind of fuck that we’re containing it the whole time that’s why we go to counselling so we can have some release and someone will listen to us

She descended into a meltdown and sometimes, unless you catch it juuuust before it tips into that then the best thing is to let the person meltdown for a while, let some of the emotion out and then provide them with the safety and security and a place to stop without judgment or anger. Once they’ve calmed down, then you go back to the behaviour they exhibited and get them to look at it from a third person perspective, removing themselves initially from the event to prevent shame interfering with working through it.
