Furui Masahiro-san is one of maybe two craftsmen still creating traditional lacquered chopsticks in Obama City, Japan. He uses a technique called “Wakasa-nuri”, invented in the early Edo period about 400 years ago and loved by nobles and Samurai families for their glittering Beauty. The method involves applying mother of pearl, eggshell, silver and gold leaf, and about 30 layers of urushi to a pair of chopsticks, then sanding back to reveal a colourful and glistening texture. Other than in Maki-e, the materials aren’t applied to the top of the Surface but are submerged in lacquer and then revealed through sanding, which means the surface won’t wear off but will reveal more layers with time. Furui-san says urushi is alive, and his chopsticks will look the most beautiful after 10 years of use. He started working as an Apprentice at the age of 15.
