My main issue with it is that there’s not much for young people to do elsewhere. Youth clubs? Shut down. Parks? They get told off by authorities for loitering. Days out? Too expensive. Hang out outside? Dangerous. There’s next to zero spaces for young people to exist safely. Even online tbh, barely any spaces for young people there too.

Ibthink it's dumb. I'm 17, not in England, but I know they'll find a way to go to social media, what they should do is social media classes where we're taught about it's danger, how to protect ourselves and how to not get too addicted, would've been very useful when I was 12

In Australia all the teens just get around the bans. The law only makes unit easier for the government to censor things, doesn't help anyone

I always love your questions! My kids are 12 and 14 years old right now. Neither of them have their own social media accounts, but my daughter (14) really wants one. It’s such a tough decision, but I’m planning to let her have one that I monitor. I certainly worry about predators on there, but also worry about her feeling left out when other friends post about things she wasn’t invited to. However, I would rather her go through these feelings and talk them out with me now than when she leaves for college. I think it’s better for them to be able to learn these tough lessons when their parents are readily available.

Putting your IDs into all sorts of databases is a wonderful idea. I’m sure it will be only ever used positively. And I’m also very sure that anonymity will remain untouched. Nobody will be ogling our messages.

I think an important context being left out is the reduction of places irl that teens have access to. No malls, movie theaters, parks or the like really

No cause why can 16-17 year olds work until 10pm but not scroll TikTok legally on their break past 9pm

Here’s a thought. Instead of making decisions about young people through the knowledge that older generations have about social media (which is barely the gist of it) and just banning it because they think that’ll make it better (it won’t). How about we just talk to the teenagers and ask them what to do because they know more about media and how dangerous it can be and are the ones actively consuming it.

I'm a teen with autism and social anxiety. I pretty much fail to socialize in person, and even if I do, it's never genuines and tires me out completely. HOWEVER, I find it much easier to connect and maintain relationships online, even with a friend from my elementary school (who stuck around for whatever reason). I don't think I would have much or any meaningful and safe connection if I wouldn't be able to use social media.

Not a teacher or professional in any way, but I did recently finish being a teenager. If a child’s mental health is being severely affected, more likely than not there are underlying issues that have nthn to do with being online. (Not saying being online helps but-) I think banning social media is like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole.

the pm tried to introduce digital IDs, which was incredibly unpopular. and what will the social media ban force you to use? a digital ID. it's just going about it a sneaky way because people didn't agree with it outright

I think it'll end up with the companies saying they don't need to do any more safeguarding because "kids aren't on the platform".

my problems with social media bans include a) the ban isn't going to fix the reason its getting banned, b) where's internet safety being taught? the kids are gonna be just as unsafe at 16 as they would 13 because no one is teaching them how to be safe, c) I have seen social media be sometimes the thing that saves youth, especially where i grew up rurally, what are the overall impacts of ripping away support, community and connection from a teen in the only place they might have it? d) how is it actually going to be enforced? there's more but I'm ending it here

I think its a good idea in theory, but they need to have other provisions in place to replace social media, youth clubs, libraries being open instead of unstaffed hours and underfunded, sport clubs and other hobby based clubs that are cheap and easily accessible for young people. even discounted cinema passes age being lowered so that younger age range can use it instead of just students. plus it doesn't help that this is being introduced just after government tried to get digital ids to become a thing, comes acroos as another way to monitor everyone not just under 16s

I feel like the concept is right but the implementation will do far more harm than good on aggregate. The general idea of protecting kids from the dangers online is valid, it’s just hard to achieve that without overshooting that target.

Our Home Secretary was quoted to “dream of an Ai powered panopticon” and now the Met police are rolling out static LFR Cameras. It was never about protecting the children.

I know it’s really going to isolate teens in our community because we don’t have the infrastructure to support them socially in our communities. We don’t have spaces they can go for free or they’re banned from being in the space without an adult. We had some cineworlds ban teenagers a couple years ago now. Everything is very expensive and our job market is non existent so a lot of teenagers don’t have jobs because there are no jobs

as someone who grew up as a country kid w the closest to social media being skylanders, this law is not good, teens need to be edjucated by more than their parents and school beacuse school cant push politics and alot of parents r not a good politival influence. kids dont need to see politivs but teens DO need to get edjucated on it and see all sides and be able to keep an eye on it to make what desicion is right and stand with their morals.

The social media ban is a single size shoe that’s ment to fit a whole generation of people. 9/10 it’s more bad than good because of the way it was implemented (I’m 16 in the uk)
