I was under the impression that speaking in tongues was a temporary gift the apostles used to communicate the gospel to people of a foreign tongue so they could understand the message of the gospel via the person with the spiritual gift speaking the persons native tongue. I personally believe it was a spiritual gift for a specific time and purpose, im not sure its active the same way today as it was when it was written about in the NT. I may be wrong but the is the impression i've gotten in my brief studies

Honest question, how is that possible? Like I always assumed God gave the spiritual gifts to the people He was closest to, and the ones who were more like him?

How does speaking in tongues happen? Went to a charismatic black church for some time and still nothing happened… maybe alone in prayer?
