@jassetgo: We traded master craftsmen who spent lifetimes hand-carving vaulted ceilings for grey drywall and glass boxes. The detail, the warmth, and the sheer soul of 500-year-old architecture just hit differently ✨ Are we actually progressing, or have we just lost our appreciation for art in the spaces we build? #arundelcastle #historicarchitecture #oldmoneyaesthetic #darkacademia #traveluk

The only upgrade is having bathrooms

rose :

Modern architecture is an upgrade if you don't only look at castle but at places that are supposed to be lived in

M :

Only upgrade is AC and plumbing

Elkedagsteyn :

as someone studying architecture: Modern architecture may not look as beautiful as this, but it's important to remember the role the World Wars played in shaping the economy, material availability, and people's lives in the post-war era. These historic buildings are undeniably beautiful, but they are also extremely expensive to build and maintain, and many have a much higher environmental impact than modern alternatives. Humanity has also evolved. As technology advances, architecture evolves alongside it. Buildings are always a reflection of their social, political, economic and technological context. That's why modern architecture can't be directly compared to architecture from hundreds of years ago, they were created to meet completely different needs, challenges and circumstances. But I do agree that these buildings are iconic and a beautiful way of telling us the stories of the past! ♡

earth without art is "eh"

I swear the architecture back then actually had soul and it was art

anna stone :

Sinan Kaya 🚕 :

I love classical architecture, but the problem is, that form will always follow function. some things were unnecessary and just expensive.

nesssaana :

Literally so beautiful

Ty Weldy :

I can’t believe some of the things our ancestors did and made

Lorenzo_Cioffi :

We got “upgrades” but we lost art & beauty

ً :

Because like everything nowadays, we want everything fast. Before they would take DECADES to build one building 😭

Jennifer Marie :

Forever wishing I was a royal in the medieval era🥹

NotWalter :

You have to remember that when all this was built the money actually had purchasing power. Unlike today where the US dollar is worth only a few cents on the dollar, for example.

VMatei Rotaru :

"Modern" anything stripped away the soul and the meaning from things. It's as simple as that, and we can thank that in no small part, ironically, to the Social Sciences. Of course, we can go back further than that, and give thanks to this state of things to the printing press, without which, though, we wouldn't even had reached such peaks, but as a true double-edged sword, ultimately ended up in gutting the aforementioned aspect quintessential to human existence.
