@drforbeez: Replying to @🌜Taryn🌛 Shout out to @Mark Cuban for providing a better alternative for human medication. I’d love an option for vet med!! #chewy #privateequity #veterinary #veterinarymedicine #corporate
Here’s an example of how I would break this down. Let’s say, independent veterinary clinics and even some of the corporate owned veterinary clinics are selling a can of prescription dog food for $5 each. Chewy comes along and says we only charge $3 per can. These smaller entities are now going to have their products sitting on a shelf while their clients go to Chewy for their canned, prescription dog food. The result is that smaller clinics won’t bother ordering the prescription food anymore because they can’t sell it. Chewy now has the monopoly on canned, prescription dog food. Now the powers that be at Chewy say “OK, now we’re going to jack up the price to $8 per can” and everyone will have to pay it because they’re the only game in town. That’s what we all have to look forward to if we continue to shop exclusively at chewy.

We actually charge a $10 outside pharmacy fee of people want us to send their scripts to chewy, we have very high success with our in house meds & online pharmacy this way.

Yep! Also you go to a chewy vet hospital, they aren’t providing low cost care. They’re still charging an arm and a leg for services, and their vets are under qualified and fresh out of school with no experience. So, they recommend when things are above their training, to a corporate R or urgent care who is I’m sure, aligned with Chewy. So they make money off pet owners through the vet care to keep the costs low for meds and food.

Chewy just asked me, when I checked out a few items for my new dog, if my cat has any medical issues. Maybe because I no longer buy cat items from them. I use the,

So you’ve convinced me to cancel my pharmacy orders with chewy and send to Vetsource which I hope is more ethical.

I'm in the environmental industry working at a small woman owned laboratory. We are encountering this issue with a large laboratory system. They are buying out all the other small labs and shutting them down. When it comes to bidding on projects, they are bidding so fcking low that us small labs can't compete with them. We used to have an advantage with the DBE/WBE programs for government projects but Trump admin decided that was DEI, so now the big companies can compete for that work too. Its a struggle.

it's not just losses. I don't even think that's even the biggest piece, though I'm sure it's part of it, but I think it's likely a small factor.
They have buying power. That's their play. They negotiate far better prices than others. therefore they can be more competitive.

I just want to thank you for speaking out about this and putting words to what so many of us are thinking. You’re doing the hard work and as a fellow veterinarian I’m behind you 💯

OTOH TARYN, my dog food company, FROMM, is so selective of who sells their food, that they will absolutely not sell on Chewy- because it was bought out by Petsmart. I'm glad my food puts pets over profits 😊

I happily pay more for my little dog’s canned C/D, dry C/D, Metacam, Gabby & Trazadone through her DVM (Privately owned). But for my own small business I do purchase my Kong Liver, Kong Peanut Butter, and other treats through the big Chew. It’s either them or Petco so I feel like I’m stuck supporting some big corporation either way on those products. But I won’t dare touch anything from Chew that I can buy from my DVM.

Same thing Amazon did/ does. Now people are addicted and buy everything from Amazon when many things are the same cost elsewhere. And even shopping in person at least we are supporting our community and keeping jobs available.

For reference, these costs aren’t cheaper then any other private or corporate hospitals. Also their dentals are $755 but that doesn’t include any Preop bloodwork or extractions..so..this is where they’re making money.
