@haleykloha: As someone who educates professionally about power and control, the rage I feel about the ways the systems supposed to help you actually reproduce harm is ALSO something the survivors I work with feel. #domesticabuseawareness #abuse #survivor #education
As a child that witnessed it and now have a career in finance, I want to teach women the financial concepts of leaving and keeping your freedom. DV has long-term effects and the ability to develop a plan with financial detachment is key (along with a supportive personal system).

Filling out paperwork is the least of it, it’s the actually helping part rather than just talking. It’s systemic. Deeply systemic.

It’s devastating frightened to navigate it all alone and have to trust a system that doesn’t always get it right. You go from one scary situation to another. In both you have little to zero control…

💯 true. The DV shelter didn’t help me, or any of the other women, like they should’ve. Neither did the county victim’s advocate. Nor the DA’s office. Not the court-appointed mediator. Not the judge. It is SO F***ed UP.

There's even more to consider. My abuser was training to be a social worker who wanted to work with women of domestic violence. And the police were beyond awful to me even though I had strong evidence of the beatings and sexual abuse I endured. So even if you try to go through all the steps (especially involving the police) you can definitely be treated like dirt along the way.

Leaving resulted in my first criminal charges, first time in jail. The state violence that took over when I set limits with him was more then I could have ever expected

just went through this tried to get a restraining order (I thought the courts would help me) and somehow I was on trial, he never had to speak, the judge had access to the police report and never looked at it. .. and it was so traumatic that I was stress paralyzed (plus brain fog from having to see him again) and didn't know what i had to say to get an order approved, no guidance what so ever... the order was denied and now the abuser probably feels empowered and it was completely unjust and i actually feel less safe for filling. I froze due to the trauma and left more traumatized.

The betrayal by the system broke me worse than the 2 decades of abuse. They added to the suffering, aided my abuser, and made everything so much harder

My IPV advocate has definitely said this is bullshit before, my anger and rage is rational, and I found that very validating.

It’s a much more harrowing road when it’s a penniless refugee from a brutal country that has fled certain death or extreme violence, who needs help and resources to get status against a hostile system

Also, so many of us experience post-separation abuse in many forms. In my case, it’s organized stalking & harassment for years!

Being abused through the legal system is the worst. Especially when you called it out from the start.
