When you first started talking about crystals, I was thinking about actual gathering of the rocks and I was very concerned because that’s what I actually do.

As a psychiatrist, it is difficult to distinguish. Many people will tell me they’re using and that makes it more clear. The medications used to treat are basically the same however.

I had meth induced psychosis and it lasted a good 3 years into sobriety. Been sober 5 years and am way better but definitely have residual effects.

When I was in psychosis, I was accused of being on crystal, and it was so detrimental to my social relationships and recovery.

omg YEESSSSSS to the end part especially. I'm no expert, but I strongly believe that access and education are far more likely to relieve this crisis than further restriction and stigmatization. I have too many thoughts here to write a reasonably lengthen comment though so ill stop there.

My friend went through a really bad psychosis period from use a year ago (not really sure he’s ever fully recovered). He stopped using for a bit but sadly went back to it

I was having crazy delusions , although I knew they weren't real I was still tortured by my inner thoughts and since your hearing is amplified, everything sounded like a knock. prior to being on amphetamines I was abusing another stimulant and wholeheartedly thought I had schizophrenia because the symptoms were so steady and frequent

how horrible that a relapse makes users more likely to develop psychosis :( to anyone struggling i do not look down upon you!! meth is just so much harder on the body than other “hard” drugs commonly abused. which breaks my heart bc it’s commonly abused in places with lack of medical care. to me it’s not something to look down on, it’s just an incredibly tragic addiction, due to the accelerated wear and tear on the brain & body. that is so heartbreaking that relapse makes it more likely.

You said “knowing how to figure out these things can really help if someone’s unwilling to admit they use a drug”. But they can also really harm - as you said, drug use is stigmatised, and people deny it for good reason. If someone in psychosis is found to be using drugs they are far more likely to be criminalised, and any methods of “figuring it out” will likely be used by police. They’re also far more likely to be sectioned (idk if the same term is used in USA, but I mean involuntary psych holds) or forced into detox or rehab. All psychotic people are at risk of this, but if drug use is found it’s more likely as a “quick fix” (ie forced abstinence) is considered economically useful, even if it doesn’t actually work. Also, there probably aren’t any defining features of drug related psychosis that aren’t found in any non drug users - but authorities don’t exactly care for 100% accuracy and so false accusations of drug use will increase. So, when people claim they are not using drugs, or refuses treatment, it’s best to respect what they say. There are far more harms resulting from (correctly or falsely) assuming they use than there are potential benefits. In my opinion there are no potential benefits, but I’m a prison and psych abolitionist and against all involuntary treatment - I don’t expect you to agree with that, but at the very least acknowledge the harms. I generally appreciate the research you discuss but this one seems more like an interrogation manual than anything of benefit to society.
