One of the most common questions I get: "How do I invite my partner to build more emotional capacity without making them feel criticized?" You cannot force someone to build capacity. You can only invite it. Instead of "You always get defensive. You need to change," try: "I don't need you to be perfect. I don't expect you to never get defensive. What I need is to know you're willing to learn how to stay with me when conversations get hard. I'd love for us to build that together." Or: "I don't think you're broken. I think both of us have places where our nervous systems run out of capacity. Would you be willing to learn with me?" You're not attacking their character. You're inviting them into growth. But an invitation is not a guarantee. The other person still has a choice. If they're willing to learn - even imperfectly - there's something to build with. If they repeatedly refuse, that's a different conversation. A healthy relationship doesn't require perfection. It requires two people willing to keep growing. #relationships #relationshiptips #nervoussystem #menscoach #emotionalcapacity
