@thepottymouthguru: One of the biggest misconceptions about accountability is that it's the same as self-condemnation. It isn't. People who become highly defensive often experience even gentle feedback as a threat to who they are. So instead of hearing, "I hurt someone." their nervous system hears, "I am hurtful." That distinction matters. Because if every mistake feels like a verdict on your character, you'll naturally want to explain it, justify it, or defend against it. Real accountability doesn't require believing you're a bad person. It requires believing you're resilient enough to acknowledge your impact without your identity falling apart. The more secure your sense of self becomes, the less energy you need to spend protecting it. ❤️🤟🏻🌿 #UNFUCKYOURSELF #THEPOTTYMOUTHGURU #RelationalTrauma #HealthyCommunication #SelfAwarenes
My husband gets even more defensive when I tell him he’s being defensive 🤷♀️

These are why I've instituted a rule in my house. Accountability for impact, forgiveness for intent. You must always take accountability for the impact you had first, no matter what. Then you can explain yourself and you may get forgiveness due to your intent/context.

The more your identity depends on being seen as "good," the harder it becomes to stay present when someone tells you that you caused pain. ❤️🤟🏻

I’m not sure it’s over exaggerated at all. These have been actual words said to me. Over and over.

I think from all the defensiveness videos I've watched from you, both my partner and myself have done these. It's a lot to take in. I've caught him doing this and I've also caught myself and have stopped it from going further but there's so many scenarios it's hard to catch them all. I think working on one or two at a time, catching it and practicing healthier techniques is good for now or else if I try to do everything it'll be an overload and seem impossible to me. I appreciate these videos though because now I can go back after we've gotten the one's we're working on under control and work on a different one. It's a lot of work! I've got a lot of retraining my brain to do from terrible examples from my childhood. I want to do better and I know my partner is trying to. He's in the same boat as me. Hope we succeed!

How does one keep a GENUINE, extreme shame response from SEEMING like im just seeking reassurance to self soothe?
I know its not their job to help me when I have hurt them.
But I find myself so overwhelmed and terrified because I screw up so often.

Sadly, I have done this at times w my kids. When I catch myself, I just stop and apologize. Sometimes they ask for an explanation, sometimes they don’t.

and they don’t think they’re being defensive because they’re not being obvious. It’s extra frustrating

I have a family member who often says something like “mom used to use that phrase (or word) and it really hurts me to hear it” to a commonly used neutral phrase or word. So I guess I just have to apologize for hurting them when I forget the list of forbidden words and accidentally use a commonly used phrase or word.

I am working on this myself and these posts are really helping but when I tell my partner I have had my feelings hurt by them they say I've imagined the situation and it's because I have BPD and I am splitting. they then do on to explain why my feelings are not real

I have been guilty of some of these. I’d like to think now it would be different! Now I think I would say “I’m so sorry, it wasn’t my intention to hurt you,, I’m sorry I did. Do you want to talk about it? ( just because the they might be pissed and need space, trying to respect and acknowledge the impact and leaving the forward move forward)
