🚨 Okay so here’s the deal: a bill that sounds like it’s about protecting elections just passed the House… but it might actually make it way harder for a lot of people to vote. 🧾 What it does:
The SAVE Act would require people to show IN-PERSON proof of citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to vote in federal elections. State IDs and military IDs won’t count 🚩 Why that’s a problem: - 69 million women have taken their spouse’s last name. In order to vote, the name on your birth certificate and your passport need to match… And it’s unclear whether they’d allow marriage certificates as proof of name change - Same goes for transgender people who have changed their names - Also, 21 million US citizens don’t even have easy access to those docs - Over 140 million Americans don’t have a passport - And no, a lot of people can’t just “get a passport” It costs $130-$165 - This could end online/mail-in voter registration - Disproportionately affects marginalized communities - Disproportionately affects older people in assisted care facilities - Disproportionately affects military service members who wouldn’t be able to solely use their military IDs - Will impact native voters who rely on Tribal IDs or do not have traditional residential addresses - Will impact disaster survivors who’ve lost their documents - Voting as a noncitizen is already illegal (and super rare) 🤔 What’s next? The bill will now go to the Senate where it’ll be voted on. If it passes, it goes to the President. 🤷🏻‍♀️ What you can do: - CALL YOUR SENATORS! Visit WeAll.Vote/fight for phone numbers and pre-made scripts! - Email your senators! Visit the site above or click on 🔗 in my in bio for a pre-made email that you just have to fill out and click send - STAY INFORMED! You can follow to stay up to date!
