In 1984, I was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada filming The House of Dies Drear alongside an incredible cast that included Howard E. Rollins Jr., Clarence Williams III, Joe Seneca, Gloria Foster, Moses Gunn, Kadeem Hardison, Tichina Arnold, and my father, Hank Ross. Based on Virginia Hamilton’s award-winning novel, the film follows 13-year-old Thomas Small (my character) after his family moves into the legendary House of Dies Drear, a former stop on the Underground Railroad. As strange events begin to unfold, Thomas and his father uncover hidden passageways, long-buried secrets, and a remarkable chapter of American history. Tichina Arnold played Pesty, one of the neighborhood kids whose presence added to the mystery surrounding the old house. It’s always special to revisit projects like this and remember the people I had the privilege of working with so early in my career. Every now and then, a photograph or a clip has a way of transporting you right back to that moment in time, and I’m grateful these memories are still here to share.
