That same year, they welcomed their son, Barack Obama, who would later become the 44th President of the United States. After her marriage ended, Ann married Lolo Soetoro and moved to Indonesia. Living there inspired her to focus on education, rural development, and helping families improve their lives through economic opportunities. Ann worked with organizations including the Ford Foundation and USAID, supporting projects in microfinance, women's economic empowerment, and community development across Asia. She believed that education and financial opportunity could help build stronger communities. While raising her family and working overseas, she continued her studies and earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1992. Ann Dunham passed away from uterine and ovarian cancer on November 7, 1995, at the age of 52. She died 13 years before her son was elected the 44th President of the United States in 2008. Her lifelong commitment to education, service, and community development remains an important part of her legacy.
