Michel Mehanna :
On the Liberation from the Law and the Return to Bondage
I. The Grace of Christ versus the Mosaic Law
Jesus Christ came into the world to liberate humanity from the heavy yoke of the Mosaic Law, which bound believers to the perpetual sacrifice of animals, ritualistic ordinances, and outward legalisms. Under the New Covenant, the faithful are called to follow Him by grace through faith, rather than by the rigorous dictates of Moses. Where the literal execution of the law engendered a spirit of servitude, Christ came to break the chains of that legalistic slavery.
II. The Adoption of Sons
By His saving grace, Christ has set us free to worship God not through external compulsion, but from the depths of a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Through this redemption, we are no longer regarded as bondservants or slaves, but are elevated to the dignity of adoption, becoming true sons and daughters of the Most High.
III. The Regression into Neo-Legalism
Yet, after six centuries of this Christian liberty, there arose a system that sought to re-impose the spirit of bondage through the islamic sharia. This system explicitly denies the salvific reality of the Crucifixion of Christ, thereby stripping humanity of the Atonement. In doing so, it endeavors to subject the liberated soul once more to a framework of legalism, rendering humanity captive again to the decrees of Sharia.
