idk my 2 week trip to Japan a few months ago was the worse I was ever treated in my life. I did alot to try to be respectful, learned a bit of Japanese, kept my volume low (every foreigner I saw there was so loud) and did so much more to try to be respectful than most I saw. but I was still physically pushed to the back of lines, denied entry to a few restaurants I had reservations for, and much higher prices in small shops and restaurants that would sell to me or even let me in. the looks and scowls I'd get are honestly unforgettable. I never felt unsafe but I definitely felt like I wasn't welcomed in the slightest.

I was in Japan for 2 weeks in January. I did not feel unwanted or judged even once. On the contrary, people were so kind and helpful, and even excited to show me around/speak to me. But I spent considerable time learning basic Japanese, learning the customs and societal norms and tried to be considerate to those around me while there. Be respectful and you will be respected.

As a foreigner. I love the culture and how people is in Japan. I might be biased as I went to a private college where everything was based on the Japanese school style. I think that might have twisted my western upbringing, and probably the reason I feel at home in Asia.
