Nunya Bizness :
Actually this is kind of misleading. John Hanson was just the president of Congress back when we had the Articles of Confederation. He didn't have any actual executive power, he was basically just a chairman. George Washington is still the real first president because he was the first one elected under the actual Constitution.

John Hanson’s position in congress was ceremonial. George Washington was the first president under the U.S. Constitution with full executive authority.

George Washington was the first elected Constitutional President. Between 1774 and 1789, 14 men served as the President of the Continental Congress (and later the Congress of the Confederation). Rather than being executive leaders, they acted as presiding officers over the legislative body. So no they were not Presidents of the United States. All of these men were appointed into office not elected by the people. here are all 14 men in chronological order: 1) Peyton Randolph (Sept 1774 - Oct 1774) 2) Henry Middleton (Oct 1774 - Oct 1774) 3) Peyton Randolph (May 1775 - May 1775) 4) John Hancock (May 1775 - Oct 1777) 5) Henry Laurens (Nov 1777 - Dec 1778) 6) John Jay (Dec 1778 - Sept 1779) 7) Samuel Huntington (Sept 1779 - July 1781) 8) Thomas McKean (July 1781 - Oct 1781) 9) John Hanson (Nov 1781 - Nov 1782) (The first to serve a full one - year term under the ratified articles of Confederation) 10) Elias Boudinot (Nov 1782 - Nov 1782) 11) Thomas Mifflin (Nov 1783 - Nov 1784) 12) Richard Henry Lee (Nov 1784 - Nov 1785) 13) Nathaniel Gorham (June 1786 - Nov 1786) 14) Arthur St Clair (Feb 1787 - Jan 1788) 15) Cyrus Griffin (Jan 1788 - Apl 1789) I know there are 15 numbered but Peyton Randolph served two terms as President of the Continental Congress. George Washington was unanimously elected as the first president of the United States on February 4th, 1789, when the state's electors cast their votes. Washington received 69 electoral votes, winning the support of every participating state. to this day, he remains the only president to achieve 100% unanimous vote in the Electoral Vollege.

George Washington is universally recognized as the first official president of the United States under the U.S. Constitution, which was ratified in 1789. The position that came before him under the Articles of Confederation was a ceremonial moderator for Congress, not a chief executive of the nation. They weren't presidents.
