Jesus never asked you to reconcile with everyone. Many Christians misunderstand this. Jesus taught us to forgive, but forgiveness and rebuilding a relationship are not the same thing. Please listen to these four biblical truths, especially if you are in a relationship where you have been deeply hurt. First, Jesus asks you to forgive. He does not force you to go back to the person who hurt you. Forgiveness means allowing your heart to be freed from pain and resentment. But reconciliation takes effort from both sides. It requires true repentance. It also requires trust to be rebuilt. Some relationships can be restored. But some relationships must remain at a distance. That does not mean you have not forgiven. Second, Jesus never asked you to stay close to people who are destroying you. The Lord Jesus said: “Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.” Luke 6:28 KJV You can pray for them. You can sincerely hope they repent and are saved. But that does not mean you must allow them to keep damaging your life. Third, Jesus never asked you to trust everyone. He said: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Matthew 10:16 KJV You can love people without giving your trust to everyone. Kindness is not naivety. Grace does not mean having no boundaries. True spiritual maturity has love, but it also has discernment. Fourth, Jesus never asked you to pretend nothing happened. He said: “Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault…” Matthew 18:15 KJV The gospel teaches us to forgive, but not to cover up sin. God loves peace, but not peace bought by sacrificing truth. So brothers and sisters, do not confuse forgiveness with allowing yourself to be hurt again. You can let go of pain, and still set boundaries. You can pray for someone, and still choose to keep your distance. A true follower of God has mercy, but also wisdom. If you want to study God’s word, understand how to walk in truth in your relationships, and learn how to prepare for the return of the Lord Jesus, you are welcome to join our online Bible study group.
