@historybyhumans: In 1996, more than 21,000 women auditioned to play Selena Quintanilla, murdered the previous year at just 23. Director Gregory Nava searched five cities, but the Quintanilla family held final approval over who would portray their daughter. When Jennifer Lopez was cast, it sparked controversy, with critics pointing out a Puerto Rican actress playing a Mexican American icon. According to those involved, Selena's mother watched Lopez audition and immediately recognized something familiar in her movements. The role was hers. Released in 1997, Selena launched Jennifer Lopez into stardom and helped pave the way for the music career that followed. The actress trying on costumes in this footage was still unknown to most audiences. She would soon become one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world.
