Two years ago, I visited Taipei 101 and was floored by the sheer engineering of it. It held the title of "World's Tallest Building" for six years, and it stands as a fortress against typhoons and earthquakes. The design is deeply symbolic and it mimics a bamboo stalk, representing resilience and growth. Structurally, this means the tower is built in eight distinct segments (a lucky number in Chinese culture), each flaring outward. Why does this matter right now? Because Alex Honnold is currently in Taipei preparing to free solo this beast. To us, those flares are beautiful architecture. To Alex, they are the "Crux." As he ascends the 1,667-foot facade without a rope, he will encounter these overhangs over and over again. He described the climb as "two easy moves, then one hard move," repeated for two hours straight. Looking at my photos from the ground up, the scale is dizzying. It’s hard to imagine a human clinging to that glass. I'm glad I experienced the view from the observatory, safe inside the glass! See those flared sections in my photos? That "bamboo" shape means he has to navigate a massive overhang every 8 floors. He has to pull himself over a ledge, 90 separate times, while hanging thousands of feet above the city streets. I took the 37-second elevator to the top and that was thrilling enough for me. Sending safe vibes to Alex for the climb of the century! 🙏 Are you tuning into the livestream to watch him? 👇 #Taipei101 #AlexHonnold #SkyscraperLive #FreeSolo #Taiwan
