@theuntoldbattles1: British boys barely old enough for school became soldiers during one of the longest sieges of the Anglo Boer War. For 217 days, Mafeking was surrounded by Boer forces. Shells exploded inside the town almost daily. Food became scarce. Sniper fire turned the streets into death traps. To free adult soldiers for combat, young boys formed the Mafeking Cadet Corps. Some were only 12 years old. They carried military messages through bombardments, guarded supplies, delivered orders across dangerous streets, and helped keep the town functioning while Boer artillery hammered the defenses. Britain became obsessed with their bravery. When Mafeking was finally relieved in 1900, celebrations erupted across the British Empire. Crowds flooded the streets like the entire war had been won. The siege turned the young cadets into national symbols of courage and duty. #Mafeking #BoerWar #AngloBoerWar #BritishArmy #MilitaryHistory
