3 To capture the iconic, natural candlelight scenes in Barry Lyndon, director Stanley Kubrick and cinematographer John Alcott used three ultra-rare Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/0.7 lenses. Originally manufactured for NASA to photograph the dark side of the moon, these lenses were adapted to fit Kubrick's Mitchell BNC 35mm cameras.

The fact that Kubrick got a NASA lens and had it mounted to a rear projection 35mm film camera to get the low light candle shots just shows his craft as a photographer. Barry Lyndon is likely his best shot film.
