Igununugun (often called Igun or Gúnnugún) refers to the vulture in the Yoruba language. In Yoruba culture, the name is highly significant and carries both literal and metaphorical meanings: Literally, igunugun refers to various species of vultures native to West Africa. In traditional lore, it is revered as "Oba Eye" (the king of birds) due to its unique stature and vital role in the ecosystem as a scavenger. In the realm of Yoruba tradition, Igunnugun is also a notable and highly revered Egungun (ancestral masquerade). The masquerade is famous for its towering superstructure—often featuring carved wooden figures of birds, monkeys, or hunters at the apex—and is known for thrilling audiences with its acrobatic displays and spinning dances. Because of the bird's unique characteristics, it features prominently in Yoruba proverbs and oriki (praise poetry). One well-known philosophical saying is: "A kì í jẹ́ igunugun, a kì í fi igunugun bo ori", which translates to: "One does not eat the vulture, nor does one use it for a head sacrifice." This highlights the sacred, untouchable, and highly specialized nature of the bird in traditional beliefs. If you are interested in the performative art and display of the Igunnugun masquerade, you can also learn more about the broader Yoruba Egungun ancestral traditions detailed on #paratiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii #xyzbca #keşfet #viraltiktok #500k
