Hi, it’s Juliana! They’re not just locking you out of the house. They’re teaching you safety is something you have to earn. We don’t come into this world knowing exactly what safety is. It’s something the home we grow up in teaches us. So when our parent does things like kicking us out in the middle of the night with no shoes and locking the door just because they’re angry… We learn that we’re only safe when our parent is happy. And this means we stop asking: “What do I need to do to be safe?” And start asking: “What do I need to do to keep them happy?” And that’s what makes this so dangerous. Because your safety and their happiness aren’t even close to the same thing. When you’re focused on staying safe… You tell someone at school what’s happening. You spend as much time as you can out of your home. You look for people and places where you feel safe. These things often don’t work straight away. But they still move you in the right direction. When you’re focused on keeping them happy… You hide what’s going on at home. You pretend everything is okay. You stop saying what you really think. Does this help you survive your childhood? Yes. But the problem many of us run into is that it doesn’t stop with our childhood. We continue focusing on keeping other people happy instead of keeping ourselves safe. Because we still think safety is something we have to earn. If you need someone to talk to about all of this, you can always send me a DM or schedule a session with me. My team and I help people heal from narcissistic abuse, and many of us have experienced it ourselves, so we're here if you need us. To your healing, Juliana ❤️‍🩹
