Iran's central bank just had roughly $475 million in crypto frozen, and it wasn't a hack. On July 15 the US Treasury named four wallet addresses belonging to the Central Bank of Iran, and Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin, froze the tokens at the contract level. Stack that on an April action of more than $344 million and the total blocked is about $475 million. Three days ago Treasury widened it again, sanctioning two more Iran linked exchanges. Sit with what that actually means. A sovereign central bank had close to half a billion dollars made unusable by a company updating a smart contract. That has never happened before. Iran had been routing oil money through crypto for years to work around sanctions. Stablecoins, mixers, offshore exchanges, all of it. People think crypto is invisible. It's the opposite. Every transaction that has ever happened is public. You just don't know whose name is attached. Picture a bank with one enormous sheet of paper listing every transaction every customer ever made, and anyone on earth can read it. That's a blockchain. The catch is volume. There's so much of it that you need serious software to sort through, which is why on chain investigators exist. They've spent years reverse engineering how the money was being hidden. So the fair question is, if they can do that to Iran, what stops them doing it to you. Honestly, nothing changed. They could already freeze your bank account. It's the same control you've been living under your whole life. If you're small, nobody cares. If you're big enough that they do care, the tool already existed. And I think this is good for crypto.
