On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip right here, beside the Latin Bridge. That single assassination set off a chain of events that led nations to declare war on one another, ultimately becoming World War I. A process that claimed millions of lives, brought down empires, and reshaped the course of the 20th century began on this ordinary street corner.
