I love being Muslim bc I can have an abortion up to 5 months for any reason, and after 5 months for specific reasons. The only reason they put that 5 month limit is bc back in the day, a 5 month fetus was too viable for the mother to abort safely and without risk of severe complications. and there's no guilt that [should be] associated with the woman (SHOULD BE bc unfortunately, the ummah is infested with patriarchal men and cultures) because the abortion/miscarriage was in Allah's plans. The fully formed woman will always be more important than a potential fetus.

Is it always a guilt thing? I have a friend who offered incense and sponsored a Ksitigarbha (Jizo) statue to be built after an abortion, but not because he felt guilty, he just felt the foetus should be accompanied to the next world

in my culture (indigenous Canadian) our elders say sometimes the spirit will stick to the mother after abortion or miscarriage. An elder or knowledge keeper will do ceremony to help the spirit pass to the spirit world. The only down side to it being stuck to the mom is that sometimes she will get sick but it's never looked at as a haunting

お地蔵様ができたのは最近かもしれないですが、水子(ヒルコ)は日本神話に出てくるような記憶があります…日本書紀や古事記は8世紀初頭の飛鳥時代に記されていたので、考え方的には大昔からあったのでは？

I totally agree that nobody should have to feel guilty for an abortion. But while there's an element of that here, I don't think Ojizo-sama are so guilt/responsibility focused. He's also the bodhisattva for animals. He's supposed to guide souls that haven't had the time/ability to reach enlightenment yet to enlightenment/peace. I feel it's (at least supposed to be) more about respect for weak creatures. Also I said "he" but Ojizo-sama's gender is also up for debate - that's another story. (- an Ojizo-sama fan)
