What happened on June 3rd 2015 Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding across many parts of Accra, especially around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange area. As people sought shelter from the floodwaters, many gathered at a GOIL fuel station nearby. That night, fuel mixed with floodwaters and ignited, causing a massive explosion and fire at the station. The combination of flooding and the explosion resulted in a catastrophic loss of life. Casualties Reports initially varied, but the final death toll was estimated at more than 250 people, with many others injured. It remains one of the worst peacetime disasters in Ghana's history. Impact Hundreds of families lost loved ones. Homes, vehicles, and businesses were destroyed. The tragedy exposed major challenges in urban drainage, flooding, and waste management in Accra. The government declared national mourning and launched investigations into the causes of the disaster. Why Ghanaians remember June 3 Every year, many Ghanaians commemorate June 3 as a day of remembrance for the victims and as a reminder of the need for better flood prevention and urban planning. It is often remembered as "Black Wednesday", a day that left a lasting mark on the nation's history. Why can't we end it now? What are we doing about it? This problem is still repeating itself so what are we doing about it? #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #environmental #cleanghana #floodcontrolproject
