An AI research campaign scanned reverse transcriptases across 1.9 billion protein clusters. In the process, an agent noticed repeating DNA beside a phage enzyme gene. Researchers followed the clue and described array-associated reverse transcriptases, or ARTs. They found an enzyme, a partner gene and a repeat array. Lab tests detected distinct short RNAs from that array during infection. That is a real finding. It is not yet a new gene-editing tool. The system's function remains unknown, and the team has not shown it can edit DNA. The interesting part is how the candidate surfaced: an agent read the raw sequence, noticed a pattern outside the planned protein search, and sent it to scientists for experimental follow-up.
