In psychiatry, because there are no lab tests, a diagnosis is a clinical construct. This means a group of psychiatrists sat in a room, looked at a list of human behaviors and emotions, and voted to group them together under a medical-sounding label (like "Major Depressive Disorder" or "ADHD").
