What advice would you give to this mom? Comment below and save this post. We'll update the caption with our lactation consultant’s suggestions tomorrow morning! UPDATE WITH ADVICE FROM OUR LACTATION CONSULTANT: 1) Pacifiers can sometimes mask early hunger cues, especially in babies who are easily soothed. It’s common to think a baby should be “full” after a certain amount of time at the breast and stay content for a set stretch, but babies don’t always follow a schedule like that. Some babies will spit out a pacifier and let you know they’re still hungry, while others may stay quiet even if they need more milk. When feeds are delayed or spaced out too much, it can interfere with your body’s milk-making process, which relies on frequent, baby-led feeding. Try to feed your baby before offering a pacifier to know they are satisfied from your milk if you wish to not nurse them to sleep for comfort. 2) Swaddling may dampen a baby's natural patterns of waking meaning it can cause longer stretches of sleep. This may interfere with how often they nurse and eventually decrease your milk supply. 3) Women with abundant milk production or large breast storage capacities may be able to eventually do without a middle-of-the-night milk removal. But for the most part, many of us benefit from taking advantage of the higher prolactin levels during REM sleep to nurse or pump. Even if all looks well in the beginning, a gradual or sudden drop-off in production can happen after a few weeks or months of discontinuing middle-of-the-night milk removals. This may show up as: ✨Low milk supply in the afternoons/evenings ✨Breast refusal ✨Fussiness at the breast ✨Feeling like you’ve “dried up” overnight Let us know if you have any questions ❤️
