Details below xx Box: 18cm by 18cm Divide into 9 squares (6cm by 6cm) Lid: 10cm by 10 cm Margin 1.8cm Cut as per the box. For the lid I folded the sides in first and glued them to the inside rather than outside as per the box. I tried to film it but my hands got in the way and it was hard to see. Happy to redo if you need xx #diycraft #giftidea #gifts

The Guillotine Was Supposed to Be Merciful The guillotine is remembered as a symbol of terror, but it began as a reform. Before the French Revolution, execution was unequal. Nobles were usually beheaded with a sword or axe, while commoners could be hanged, broken on the wheel, or killed in slower, more public ways. In 1789, Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin argued that if France was going to keep the death penalty, every condemned person should face the same swift method. He did not invent the machine that carries his name. The final design was shaped by surgeon Antoine Louis and built by Tobias Schmidt. But Guillotin's name became attached to the device because it represented a revolutionary promise: equality before the law, even at the scaffold. Then the Revolution radicalized. During the Reign of Terror, the guillotine became the image of political justice turned into political violence. It killed kings and queens, nobles and priests, revolutionaries and counterrevolutionaries - including Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and eventually Robespierre himself. That is what makes the guillotine so haunting. It was born from Enlightenment ideas about reason, equality, and reducing suffering. But in practice, it became a machine that made death public, efficient, and political. France continued using the guillotine long after the Revolution. Its final execution by guillotine was in 1977, and France abolished the death penalty in 1981. #FrenchRevolution #Guillotine #ReignOfTerror #History #HistoricalContext
