I’m a nurse and I truly feel like there’s no substitute for a good old fashion sponge bath with soap and water. Ask for 2 basins, one for soapy water and one for just plain water. They should bring you a stack of wash cloths, use one for each separate part of your body.

Staff should be helping you everyday with bathing and with hair washing occasionally. More importantly fight for better pain control! Ask if they have a pain team that can consult?

Hair washing hack I’m a nurse and have done this numerous times. First the headboard on the bed is removable have some one remove it get a staff member to get you a clean trash bag, clean water pitcher, several towels and a clean blanket. Have someone Get the small garbage can that should be in your room put it on the floor at the back of the head of the bed place the closed end of the bag in the can then roll the blanket into a long tube place it in the open end of one side of the bag roll the bag over it this will be to rest your neck and place your hair in the bag so water runs into the bag to the can. Use the water pitcher to wet your hair with warm water and shampoo your hair rinse. Wrap your hair in a towel remove the bag and blanket pour the water out in the tub I hope that made sense

I highly suggest looking for a local person that can come braid your hair, even the people that put fun colors in your hair. Paint your nails, invest in face masks, have family bring blush, mascara, etc just to help you feel human. All the little things to brighten your day and give you a reason to keep going.

Ask about a nerve block. I wish they had an adult version of child life they make things less stressful and scary for kids for procedures. Also tell the surgeon and anyone else that you are waking up in pain so they can switch up the medication they give you for it.

Soap and Water! Stop using those funky wipes! 2 basins, 1 for wash. 1 for rinse. ask for a STACK of wash cloths and towels.
Inflatable Hair basin from Amazon if they don't have any at the hospital. .

Hey CNA here! Those wipes are good for short term bathing but long-term you’re much better off with soap and water. The staff should be able to get you a basin, wash cloth, and towel and I recommend a good anti bac soap like Dial. Scrub what you can and have someone else help scrub what you can’t. You’ll feel and smell 10x better, especially if you are able to put a good scented Vaseline or lotion on!

lay the head of the bed back. but a pink bucket under your head with a bunch of towels and have someone pour fresh water over your hair and shampoo and conditioner..it will take a few pouring outs and refills but would be worth it to feel clean

Have they offered one of those blowup shampoo bowls for your hair to be washed while in bed? I had one before and OMG it was amazing. You use a pitcher of water, shampoo and there is a drain to go into another pitcher. Use de tangle spray instead of conditioner. Voila.

Nurse here, ask for a basin, washcloths and soap and do a bed bath. Old fashioned soap and water feel a lot better than the wipes! You can also use a square basin and lots of towels to do a hair wash.

Nurse and someone who was a patient for a while. See if someone will braid your hair. It truly is a game changer. Use a separate wash cloth for each part of your body! You got this!

Ask for the anesthesia dr as soon as you wake up and tell them you are in pain. Also ask for a pain block and/or pain pump to your leg.
