Baby Boomers are Gen W in the same way Millenials are Gen Y. It is a term for both, but nobody uses their alphabetical categorizations because there are more unique names for them

People don’t realize we weren’t naming generations until making up labels like “Baby Boomers” and “Generation X” became a method for getting your name out there. Copeland made a lot of money off of the phrase Generation X just by having it catch on and getting him some notoriety, which led to more of his works selling. The whole reason the term Millennials exists because people didn’t like Generation Y, and there was money to be made in naming the next generation. Since the “generation + letter” format is easier to use and is sequential, it’s commonplace now and there’s little to gain from coining a new label since we already have an easy-to-use shorthand for when we want to distinguish a new generation. It’s all fairly silly at this point, but people love creating competition between identifiers, so it’ll probably continue for the foreseeable future.
