Do the original languages use a/an as indefinite articles? I thought that, in French, they would have been un, une, and des. These don't seem to fit with the hypothesis presented.

Fascinating! I’m from up in northern Maine. Acadian country. Our ancestors had been exiled to Louisiana where they settled. They said they were ‘Acadians’ but in our French accents, people heard ‘a Cajuns’. ❤️

Seems like it’s happening with “other”. “Another” is morphing into “a nother”, and in “a whole ‘nother thing”.

It’s common and not worth correcting, but another has become “a nother” instead of “an other” when emphasizing more.
