You absolutely bring a gift no matter what event you go to if someone is hosting. Period… especially if it’s a good friend.

I agree. Unless explicitly stated, I’d never show up empty handed. And even then, I’d bring a card or bottle of wine.

You should bring a gift. BUT I do feel that we’ve reached the point in overconsumption that it feels moot and hard to find something someone would want. Like if they really wanted it they’d buy it themselves or I can’t afford it and or what could I gift that they don’t already have. I try to bring consumables- coffee, treats, wine etc or a homemade card if I actually like you. It’s kinda the same at Christmas. The stress of purchasing tons of gifts bc the calendar says it’s time is exhausting. Another caveat is if I traveled to get to the party, my presence is the gift. Just my thoughts and feelings, good question!

I never showed up to anyone’s gathering empty-handed even if it’s not a birthday party

My step dad threw a large birthday party for my mom’s 50th birthday. A band lots of food. The place was packed. But other than us her kids and close family. I didn’t see anyone else bring presents. Which was a bit disappointing. You could at least bring a small token of your appreciation considering the amount of time money and effort was put into an event you’re enjoying which is to celebrate another person. 🤷🏼♀️

I always tell people no gifts bc I’m happy just to have them there. I think exceptions are for one time events like weddings/ baby showers. My birthday or Christmas I could care less

I would never expect gifts for a birthday get together. And honestly, you probably wouldn’t either right?

I’m at a time in my life where all of us have a house full of kids and usually when the moms get together for a birthday, we go out to dinner. I always ask the server for their check so I can buy their dinner. We all understand not doing gifts because money is tight for all of us. When I do a gift, I try and make it something that is consumable or will go away - usually a fancy pot of flowers for the porch. Can you share what you bring for a gift? Sometimes it’s hard to shop for people when they already have clutter or buy all the things they want for themselves

It’s a new thing. I noticed it too, no one brings gifts anymore. You arrive and your presence is enough. Not sure why, but gifts aren’t done as much anymore.

I would for sure bring a gift! If I’m being offered anything to eat or drink I will bring a gift. If it’s an acquaintance it may be a more neutral/boring gift since I don’t know the person very well but if I know they are spending money so will I ✨

Agree with you. If its someone that you're close to maybe bring something small and sentimental but lots of times people just want to get together and celebrate without adding the stress of shopping for the "right gift " for the person who has it all.

Absolutely! And there should have been a gift table. I think it’s completely classy. You never go anywhere empty handed. Even if they say no gifts, you still bring something. It doesn’t matter if we have everything, gifts are still nice and appreciated.

I offered to make the charcuterie board for the gathering so technically I didn’t show up empty handed. But when it came time for gifts I was the only one who didn’t bring one. I felt soooo bad and I will never do that again.

One thing you can talk about is being an example to your children. They learn by seeing their parents give and show appreciation. My now adult child never shows up empty-handed… On her own accord now.

Always bring a gift. Even for a casual house visit. The bigger the event, the bigger the gift. 🤷♀️

not everyone is inherently bad. not everyone is so calculated. not everyone thinks as much as you do. try not to judge as much, God doesn’t want us to judge

Sorry I think it’s rude not to bring a gift. Obviously at 50 we probably do not need a gift but to me it’s about manners. The host spending money on the guest to throw themselves a party you can at least bring a gift which shows respect.
