You see something wrong with this, but those who are truly mature understand that Damon made the right decision. He finally learned not to be selfish anymore and did exactly what Elena would have wanted (not to sacrifice everyone for her, especially since it was her best friend). Damon matured and learned to love Elena exactly the way she needs, respecting her principles. What would it have been like if he had saved Elena, only for her to wake up and find out that Damon had killed her best friend? How could their love have possibly continued?
