The flooding we experience in Ghana is not just a technical problem—it is largely a result of our own actions.
Many people are selling in places where they should not be, especially along waterways and drainage channels. Others dump refuse into gutters without considering the consequences. When the rains come, these gutters are blocked, water cannot flow freely, and flooding becomes inevitable. Yet, we are quick to blame the government for everything.
If authorities attempt to remove people from waterways or demolish structures blocking drains, some people resist and fight to protect their personal interests. We cannot expect development while refusing to obey simple rules that protect us all.
Another worrying issue is that very few people are willing to help keep our environment clean. We wait for the government to desilt gutters, even though we are the same people who throw waste into them. Some even empty household waste and septic tanks into drains when it rains. These practices are dangerous, irresponsible, and contribute directly to the flooding we complain about.
The government must strictly enforce the law by removing structures and shops built too close to gutters and waterways. At the same time, every Ghanaian must take responsibility for keeping our environment clean. A clean and safe Ghana is not the government's responsibility alone—it is the responsibility of every citizen.
The question is: When will we change as a people?
