Among tornadoes rated EF4 (or F4 before the Enhanced Fujita Scale was introduced), one of the deadliest ever recorded was the 1953 Worcester, Massachusetts F4 tornado. Striking on June 9, 1953, this violent tornado remains the deadliest confirmed F4 tornado in U.S. history, claiming 94 lives and injuring more than 1,200 people. The Worcester F4 tornado caused approximately $53 million in damage in 1953 dollars, which would amount to hundreds of millions of dollars today. Rescue workers spent days searching through the debris for survivors, while communities across the region came together to help those who had lost everything. Although later tornadoes such as the 2011 Joplin EF5 and the 1999 Bridge Creek–Moore F5 received more national attention, the Worcester tornado remains a landmark event in tornado history. It demonstrated that violent tornadoes can occur far beyond the traditional Tornado Alley and helped inspire improvements in weather forecasting, warning systems, and public safety.
