@loggerheadmarinelife: She did everything she was supposed to do. Earlier this week, Loggerhead Marinelife Center responded to an adult loggerhead sea turtle that had been struck by a boat. Despite her severe injuries, she still made her way ashore to lay her eggs, carrying out the natural nesting process that sea turtles have followed for millions of years. After nesting, she became stranded on the beach and was unable to return to the ocean on her own. Our team quickly responded and transported her to Loggerhead Marinelife Center, where veterinary staff worked tirelessly to give her every possible chance at recovery. Despite every effort to save her, her story did not have the outcome we had hoped for, and her injuries were too severe. This loss is a heartbreaking reminder that boat strikes continue to be one of the greatest threats facing sea turtles. These animals must surface to breathe. During nesting season, (March 1st - October 31st ) they are at an even greater risk of being struck by vessels as they travel to and from our beaches and spend more time near the surface and shoreline. Please remember to go slow for those below, wear polarized sunglasses, and stay alert while on the water. A moment of awareness can save an endangered species’ life.
