@realmairie: 47 Detours - Day 37: Kyoto Detour in July When people visit Kyoto, they usually head to the same places. But Kyoto is more than Gion, Arashiyama, and Kiyomizu-dera. Especially in July, when the heat and crowds peak during Gion Matsuri, why not take a different route? Instead, take a detour to: 🍶 Fushimi Sake Brewery District — Historic streets lined with traditional sake breweries, many of which offer tastings and guided tours. 🚣 Jikkokubune Canal Boat Ride — A relaxing boat ride through Fushimi’s historic waterways, ending near the Misu Lock Gate Museum. 🏯 Fukuchiyama Castle — A reconstructed castle town in northern Kyoto Prefecture that’s perfect for exploring by bicycle. 🐉 Amanohashidate — One of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. This natural sandbar is traditionally viewed upside down (matanozoki), where it’s said to resemble a dragon ascending into the sky. Don’t miss the rotating Kaisenkyo Bridge or the boat ride where you can feed seagulls along the way. Gion Matsuri is Kyoto’s most famous festival and one of Japan’s oldest, with a history of over 1,100 years. It began in 869 as a ritual to pray for the end of an epidemic. Throughout July, the city comes alive with traditional events, but the highlight is the spectacular Yamaboko Junko float processions on July 17 and 24, where enormous handcrafted floats, some over 25 meters tall, are pulled through Kyoto’s streets. #47detours #kyoto #japantrip #hiddengem
