My family survived the Nazi regime. I had so many questions for my mother. Many she was able to answer, but the one I could never understand was why did the population go along. After 60+ years, I now know. I have seen it happen here at home.

Another things you say are informative, I disagree with you. The reason the German people went along with Hitler's. They didn't get the real news, they got what Joseph Goebbels wanted them to see. Yeah, kind of like now on this Iran war, we're only hearing what Trump wants us to see. So now I disagree with you, most of the German people were blissfully ignorant about what was going on in Germany.

The Age of Revolutions doesn’t address Germany specifically, but Fareed Zakaria argues that freedom is uncomfortable. People will gladly give up their freedoms and embrace authoritarianism when they get exhausted and confused by decision fatigue and rapid change. That’s why liberalism and authoritarianism are always ping-ponging back and forth - because one is uncomfortable and unsafe and the other is oppressive but feels like safety.
