I listened to a focus group a few months ago with Trump voters talking about immigration enforcement. It was soon after Renee Good and Alex Pretti were killed. One woman said she really didn’t like the violence of ICE operations, but she understood why large scale deportations were necessary, and repeated some blood and soil nationalist nonsense. It hit me that this was probably not dissimilar from how a middle class German during that time might have sounded— “I don’t like how they go about it, but we have to do something about the Jewish question.”

My family survived the Nazi regime. I had so many questions for my mother. Many she was able to answer, but the one I could never understand was why did the population go along. After 60+ years, I now know. I have seen it happen here at home.

the rise of MAGA makes the answer to the question all too clear. however, there are very valid causes for the rise of those movements. people are struggling and looking for answers. propaganda and fear go a long way in uncertain times.

Every answer is right in a way, but I think it’s simply survival. Take the meds, get the promotion, don’t piss off the overseers, etc. it’s all just part of, “ I need a paycheck and govt is helping us survive”

Another things you say are informative, I disagree with you. The reason the German people went along with Hitler's. They didn't get the real news, they got what Joseph Goebbels wanted them to see. Yeah, kind of like now on this Iran war, we're only hearing what Trump wants us to see. So now I disagree with you, most of the German people were blissfully ignorant about what was going on in Germany.
