Long before most of the city had properly started its day, drovers were already pushing cattle, sheep, and pigs through the streets. Buyers, butchers, tavern keepers, porters, watchmen, and thieves all worked around the same crush of animals, mud, straw, manure, carts, and shouting. This was not the later Victorian covered Smithfield Market people know today. In 1815, it was still an open, chaotic livestock market in the middle of London. Animals were driven through crowded streets to be sold, inspected, bargained over, and moved on toward slaughterhouses, kitchens, taverns, and shops. The noise and smell were part of daily city life. Smithfield was useful, profitable, and deeply unpleasant. It helped feed London, but it also brought congestion, filth, accidents, crime, and constant complaints. By the 19th century, many people wanted livestock markets and slaughtering pushed out of central London. Eventually, the old open livestock market was replaced by the later covered meat market. But in 1815, this was still normal. London woke up to hooves, smoke, shouting, and the smell of animals in the street. #History #london #historytok
