After graduating college I realized that a degree is a representation of your ability to apply yourself to something for an extended period of time and stay consistent towards a goal. Time management, doing things you don’t want to do, communication, etc. More than it is your skill set in the field you choose.

100% agree. Engineer here, could I solve a differential equation on the spot still, no. But I could prob learn quickly how to again if I needed

This is actually so helpful. I’m getting my PsyD and I feel imposter syndrome because I’m not retaining everything thrown at me.

Took a 4wk summer class and let me tell you that information was in one ear and out the other. There wasn’t time to memorize any of it because we moved on so quickly

Also persistence, exposure to diverse people and opinions, problem solving, applying knowledge, etc. It is all more valuable than all those facts!

A major in mathematics and I don’t remember 98% of what I learned, but those high-level classes drilled the basic skills into my head so much I can teach any high school math class no problem

You also learn conclusions. People can remember conclusions that they came to long after they have lost the detailed knowledge. And justified conclusions based on truths are valuable

I enjoyed and learned more in my minor than my major. I literally had like four courses in my major and at the end I was like that John Travolta meme looking like "what that it?" 😂

the ammount of times in job interviews i have said "I studied it in school but need a moment to catch up" is crazy but softwares change, technical stuff, change and research develops you can not be an expert in everything even if employeers which you to be

One of my statistics professors always said that he does not expect us to remember most of the information, but that we can walk away from the class with the ability to use what we remember and figure it out! Fully agree with you.

I teach public speaking and other communication courses. I tell them a story about a girl in my class who later came back to say she had used what I taught her at a funeral. She felt compelled to speak on behalf of the deceased because no one really knew that person like she did. It was her 6 month old nephew and she was his primary caretaker. They hadn't seen the sprouting buds of personality in him the way she had. I tell them all the time that you never know when you will be called to speak and you won't know what the stakes are, so be ready.

How about if you are going for graduate school? I am so scared for it as I know that I forgot a lot of things already 🥲. Maybe some subject I forgot how to learn it too ://
