The way people say they’re “regulating their nervous system” when they just mean they calmed down

I have a literal degree in neuroscience and the only thing I learned is that I know nothing about neuroscience relative to experts

I’m concerned about this too. I study neuroscience, and the blanket idea that you can just “increase your dopamine levels or serotonin levels” is really silly, because everything also has a specific pathway, and the communication between neurons usually includes various types of neurotransmitters that can cause different experiential perception changes within a relatively minute range. Also structural differences exist between individuals, as well as differences in brain activity between structures depends on the individual as well.

i would not call talking about oxytocin, serotonin, and one's nervous system as "pathologising" since they are just biology terms and not inherently pathology terms (my take having done linguistics, now doing clinical psychology)

The problem, as it always, is that being aware of a concept and understanding a concept are not the same thing

My sister has a PhD in neuroscience and it’s nice to have someone to roll my eyes with when it comes to this stuff. I also have my masters in public health and have done a lot of data work on trauma and resilience, and I mean something specific when I talk about trauma, but it’s become a catch-all. But language is gonna language, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
