@mollyg.unit: the average 401k balance of 25-34 year olds is just over just over $50,000 but the median for that same age group is ~$18,000. the median is a better figure to compare against :) #401k #PersonalFinance #investingforbeginners
The median 401k for a 38 year old is only 45k… that’s terrifying. 6% every check, people. If you have an employer match, you’re throwing away money if you don’t contribute. You won’t notice 6% of your paycheck after taxes. You will notice when you’re working at 75 years old.

I was pretty lucky, my employer matches 20% so that helped me significantly get my 401k to 337k by age 32. I started when I joined the company at 28.

y'all are missing the point, she's just saying that median is a more accurate indication of where most people are at

Even if you are "way behind" your peers, never get discouraged to invest whatever you can. Especially when young.

Comments saying the median is too low, probably don’t understand the difference between median and average, or the purpose between them. Your post is correct.

Most people don’t understand statistics. That’s why they use the mean but the best measure is the median

daily reminder to definitely compare yourself to the average and not the median. The average is higher and that’s exactly why you should have a goal set to get close to that number. Always compare yourself to things that are better/higher and not find excuses to be anything less than what you’re meant to be ❤️

I felt i was way behind. I didn't start contributing to my 401k until almost 30. I'm almost 40 now and have ~90k. but in that time i bought a house, paid off a car and my student loans. the best day to start was the first day you got a paycheck. the second best day to start is TODAY.

Don’t compare to the average or the median. Figure out the numbers you realistically need and see if you are on track. How you compare to others isn’t going to change whether or not your struggling to retire

This doesn’t really apply to 401k’s actually. Because of the contribution limit, it’s essentially impossible for huge outliers in a given age group. There’s not going to be many 27 year olds with millions of dollars in their 401k because they’ve been limited to <$24k in contributions per year of their working life.

I would have a number you need for retirement as a goal. Only you know personally how much you need and not someone else.

No need to compare. 1x your salary at 30, 3x at 40, 6x at 50.
